5500 EX PolyUrea/Polyaspartic Coating

5500 EX is an 87% solids, two-component aliphatic MDI polyurea-aspartic blend. It is ideal for:

  • Slow-set applications where extended working time is essential.
  • High-gloss and high-build finishes.
  • Use as a clear finish coat with excellent elongation, flexibility, and impact resistance.
  • USDA compliance for incidental food contact.

Advantages

  • UV-stable and does not chalk or yellow.
  • Excellent stain and abrasion resistance.
  • High adhesion to concrete and topcoats.
  • Waterproof and elastomeric properties for durability.
  • Fast turnaround times for floor applications.

Applications

5500 EX is versatile and suitable for:

  • Decorative concrete floor finishes.
  • Industrial, commercial, and residential floor coatings.
  • Kitchen floor sealing and finishing.
  • Clear topcoats for color chips and quartz.
  • Slabs, stairs, pedestrian walkways, and exterior applications.

Preparation

  1. Concrete Cure: Ensure a minimum 28-day cure.
  2. Surface Cleaning: Remove contaminants like oils, wax, and curing agents.
  3. Profile Creation: Provide a rough surface profile (2-3 mils) for optimal bonding.
  4. Moisture Testing: Use ASTM F1869 to measure moisture vapor transmission (MVT).

Priming & Moisture Vapor Reduction

  • Self-priming or compatible with ASTC primers like 6000 Series Epoxy Primer, 7001 Pen Prime, and 8000 CMW.
  • For MVT above 3 lbs/1,000 sq ft/24 hrs, use 6007 Nova Bar Epoxy Primer.

Application Guidelines

  1. Mixing: Combine parts A and B at a 1:1 ratio using a jiffy mixer at slow speed.
  2. Pigment Addition:
    • Add 12–14 oz of ASTC pigment per gallon.
    • For white, add 16 oz per gallon.
    • Add 3–4 oz of xylene for better pigment dispersion.
  3. Coating:
    • Apply with a squeegee and back-roll using a 1/4″-3/8″ nap roller.
    • Apply thin coats of 5–10 mils.
    • Recoat within 1–2 hours or after light sanding if exceeded.
