7000 Series Primer: Primer for Polyurea, Polyurethane and Epoxy Coatings
The 7000 Series (7001 PenPrime) is ASTC’s single-component primer for polyurea, polyurethane and/or epoxy coatings. It is designed to chemically bond and cross-link with ASTC polyurea spray systems and to prime concrete and steel prior to ASTC coatings and joint products. Single component – no mixing. Sold in 1, 5 and 55 gallon units.
Where It Is Used
- Primer for ASTC polyurea spray systems (1006, 1007, 1007 AL) – the polyurea cross-links with PenPrime and produces excellent results when used together as a system.
- Primer for polyurethane and epoxy coatings on concrete floors.
- Primer for large moving expansion joints filled with 3246 PenJoint, and for structural steel and tank surfaces.
Application Notes (from the ASTC product data sheets)
- Prime 1 to 2 hours prior to the 1006 application and 2 to 4 hours prior to the 1007 / 1007 AL application for best results. Spray the polyurea on the primer only after the primer has become tack free.
- Avoid heavy mil thickness of primer – maintain the mil profile with the primer.
- Steel: prime immediately after cleaning to avoid flash rusting.
- Joints: for best bonding apply the joint product as soon as possible over the primer once the solvent in the primer has flashed. Small exterior joints of less than 1/2” do not need a primer.
- Use with ASTC’s 8000 CMW vapor barrier treatment on concrete as part of a “systems approach” to reduce out-gassing and pinholes.
Limitations
- Do not use on wet surfaces. Keep out of direct sunlight and store at room temperature on wood pallets.
