7001 PenPrime

The 7001 PenPrime by ASTC Polymers is a single-component aromatic polyurethane primer designed to deliver exceptional adhesion, toughness, and corrosion resistance. It is a moisture-cure primer ideal for sealing and preparing surfaces exposed to demanding chemical and physical environments.

7001 PenPrime Aromatic Polyurethane Primer with Superior Adhesion and Corrosion Resistance

Applications

The 7001 PenPrime is suitable for:

  • Polyurea Applications: Primer for all polyurea coatings.
  • Concrete Floors: Primer prior to epoxy or urethane floor coatings.
  • Metal Surfaces:
    • Tanks, vessels, and structural steel.
    • EPDM roofing for polyurea applications.
  • Cold Environments: Ideal for expansion joints, airfields, and industrial settings.

Advantages

  • Compatible with ASTC’s Crystal Matrix Waterproofing (CMW).
  • Works on a variety of substrates, providing a strong cross-link with polyurea coatings.
  • Accelerated set time available with an optional accelerator.
  • Semi-flexible with excellent impact resistance.
  • Effective in protecting concrete and steel from corrosion.

Coverage

  • Dry film thickness: 2–3 mils per coat; heavier applications up to 8 mils for specific needs.

Preparation

  1. Concrete Surfaces:
    • Ensure a 28-day cure before application.
    • Remove curing agents, oils, wax, and other contaminants.
    • Perform a moisture vapor test before application.
    • Clean surfaces using an abrasive “brush-off” blast to provide a rough profile (minimum 2 mils).
    • Seal/repair cracks, spalls, and voids with ASTC-approved products (e.g., 830, 4034, 3004).
  2. Metal Surfaces:
    • Round off sharp edges and remove burrs, weld splatter, and rough welds.
    • Clean thoroughly to eliminate contaminants.
    • Achieve a 2-mil profile through sanding, grinding, or sandblasting.
    • Use SSPC-SP standards for surface preparation:
      • Severe Exposure: SSPC-SP-5 Near-White sandblasting.
      • Mild Exposure: SSPC-SP10/NACE Near-White blast cleaning.

Curing Time and Temperature

  • Set Time: 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
  • Cure Time: 2 hours at 70°F (environmental temperature affects curing).
  • Application Temperature Range: 35°F to 125°F.
  • Post-Application:
    • Allow the product solvent to “flash” before applying the topcoat.
    • If fully cured, sand/abrade the surface to create a profile before recoating.

Limitations

  • Not for Wet Surfaces: Ensure all surfaces are clean and dry.
  • Storage: Store at room temperature on wood pallets, away from direct sunlight.
  • Environmental Conditions: Set time may vary with temperature and humidity.

Color

  • Clear, honey-colored.

Health and Safety

  • For professional applicators only.
  • Wear protective clothing, goggles, and a NIOSH-approved mask.
  • Use positive air supply in confined spaces.
  • Read the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) before application.
